Society develops to meet the challenges it faces. Many of those challenges can be met by advancements in science. It is a circular relationship - one influences the other. This year you are fortunate to participate in a new initiative at Yale that will allow you to better see the relationship between the development of science and technology by taking Science and Social Studies for the entire school year.
Throughout the course you are expected to complete the units presented to you in each subject area, listen carefully to your Social Studies and Science teachers and look for connections between science and social studies. You may find that one drives the other or you may find that there is no clear pattern at all. Your job will be to simply make as many connections as you can and describe those connections deeply using the language and concepts taught throughout the school year.

At the end of the year, you will be presenting a portfolio that highlight key elements in the course materials you have covered and how they are related. YOU ARE NOT EXPECTED TO MAKE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN EVERY CONCEPT.
Think of it like a Venn diagram where the overlapping points are the connections that you have made. For example, we just completed safety and discussed why various symbols are standardized. In developing countries and/or during the industrial revolution there were a lot of injuries. What do you think drove the standardization of safety symbols in the form of images and how do you think that this standardization impacted the lives of the workers?

Your task is to show what you have discovered and present your case. If your logic is sound and the academic content is true you WILL be successful.
HINTS to get started.
HINTS to get started.
- BE FLEXIBLE. You could take Keep a summary of materials covered in each class; NOT your notes, but the key elements of your notes.
- Begin an electronic version of your summaries, it will prove easier to organize/move/cut & paste materials into your final presentation format.
- Each day review your notes and try to find ways that they relate to other concepts in the same course, with concepts in the other course AND with current events.
- Find articles in the news that relate to science or socials. Save them as they may prove invaluable when it comes time to put it all together as a final presentation.
- Working 10 minutes a day on this project portfolio will not only allow you to review course materials for tests and quizzes, but it will also mean that you are organized and will be able to complete the final presentation piece quickly.
- FINALLY, don’t panic!!
